COURSE AIM
Leisure science as an interdisciplinary discipline has the task of systematically describing, explaining and providing understanding of leisure as a complex phenomenon. The course treats leisure science from the perspectives of behavioural and social science, nature and the liberal arts. The aim of the course is that the students acquire basic knowledge of the development and significance of leisure from these perspectives.


CONTENTS

Module 1: Man and leisure, 5 credits
- leisure science as discipline, education, field of work and research
- the concept of leisure - free time yesterday, today and tomorrow
- people's need of leisure for their well-being and health - psychological perspectives/sports
- leisure and learning
- sociological perspectives - gender, ethnicity, social background, age and demographic aspects - the process of socialization
- project

Module 2: Society and leisure, 5 credits
- the ideology and policy of leisure
- political goals and means for recreation activities
- public, political and administrative organizations, their tasks, authority and problems, leisure in social planning
- leisure as a regional development factor, leisure and commercialisation
- the development, organization and function of the popular movements
- project

Module 3: Nature and leisure, 5 credits
- nature as resource for recreation, healthcare and learning, outdoor education
- landscapes of nature and culture
- outlooks on nature and environmental consciousness
- the interplay between man and nature - the basics of ecology
- outdoor life
- project

Module 4: Culture and leisure, 5 credits
- culture as a reflection of society, outlooks on culture and concepts of culture
- cultural diversity
- culture, politics and the market, commercial culture
- culture as experience - high culture, popular culture, mass culture
- people's need of creative cultural activities and the personal development that goes with it, culture - refinement and identity

TEACHING
The teaching will consist of lectures, lessons, group discussions, excursions, field studies, study visits and literature seminars. A project (equivalent to 4 credits) that combines the different aspects of the course is included in the course. The project will be carried out by the end of the course and will, in other words, be focused on the content of all four different course modules. Preparatory to the project work, there will be tuition in the basics of research methodology, the theory of science and descriptive statistics, and in the reading and writing of scientific reports.


EXAMINATION
Evaluation of performance of course assignments carried out in the form of reflecting reports. Written and oral examination, individually and in groups. Projects will also be evaluated.
