PREREQUISITES
General entrance requirements. Applicants must also have basic knowledge of computers. The course involves independent work with the computer as a tool and familiarity with the Internet and word processing is therefore required. Applicants should have completed a basic course in IT or have equivalent knowledge, meaning basic knowledge of concepts and terminology in the field of IT, and basic skills in using a computer and standard programmes such as word processing, simple calculation and e-mail programmes and a web reader.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that the students
- acquire knowledge of how modern information technology changes the conditions of work and organisation in society, with an emphasis on educational activities
- develop ability to formulate, delimit, investigate and present an educational problem for the purpose of developing IT-education in the field of education
- reflect on and develop ability to use the computer as an educational tool
- choose, work on and visualise information for communication and learning
- develop ability to use IT for communication within the course and in their professional activities
- gain familiarity with current research on computers in educational activities and discuss and reflect on crucial issues
- acquire a comprehensive view of IT and education

CONTENTS
1.Society, education and Information and Communication Technology.
The purpose of this aspect of the course is to show society's intentions with educational activities, how educational activities influence society and how these aspects can be influenced by IKT. Perspectives on learning and computers from government level to schools and school units are treated and both international and national aspects are considered.
2. The educator and learning with IT as a tool
The purpose of this aspect of the course is to illuminate the educator's profession, modern outlooks on learning and how IT can support the teacher and learning and be a tool in the educational activities. Both practical aspects of teaching and administrative aspects of the teaching profession are considered.
3. Educational production and development strategy
This aspect of the course is focused on the tools and forms by which the teacher can use the computer for instance in multimedia production. It also illuminates the need and benefit of strategic development of educational computer activities. Models for strategy/development work and working methods for multimedia production are treated. All of this is to be connected to the student's everyday life.

TEACHING
Distance education.

EXAMINATION
Examination through hand-in assignments and through presenting and opposing a project on IT in educational activities. The grading is done by the course co-ordinator in consultation with the supervisors.

REMARKS
The students must have the following equipment:
A PC with Internet connection, a word processing program compatible with Microsoft Word and a web reader, for example MS Explorer or Netscape. A printer is useful, but not required.
