PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the courses MAM084, MAM083 and MAM116.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that the students acquire
- knowledge of the significance of problem solving as a means of developing knowledge of concept both for their own and for their pupils' sake
- deeper knowledge of how mathematical problems can be presented and how this influences pupils' learning

CONTENTS
The constructivism in mathematics. Mathematics from a cultural and social perspective. Differences and similarities between mathematics and science and how this reveals itself in the teacher's and the pupils' activities in class, construction of mathematical assignments and strategies for problem solving. The significance of variations both as regards content and as regards work design of work, and of having a base from which these variations emanate. Laboratory features in mathematics. Mathematics as a tool for understanding aspects of other subjects. The mathematical language and mathematics as a language. Good and bad points in using concrete matter in mathematics tuition.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons and group work.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
