PREREQUISITES
General entrance requirements. Applicants must also have completed the first general field of education (20 credits).

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire in-depth knowledge of
- the axiomatic and deductive structure of plane geometry
- demonstration and logical argumentation
- the historical development of mathematics

The students are also to acquire insights into
- the importance to explain geometry at school both by practical and theoretical models of explanation
- advantages and disadvantages with geometric models of explanations for understanding of fractions, percentage and algebra
- differences between learning in a school environment and in everyday life
- the significance of language and pictures to definitions and conceptualisation
- the practical applicability of geometry as a starting-point for problem solving and conceptualisation at compulsory school


CONTENTS
Selected theorems and evidence in Euclid's geometry. Constructions with a pair of compasses and a ruler. Depiction of similarity. Reflections. Proportionality and scale. Models of explanations for areas and volumes at compulsory school. Patterns. Problem solving and mathematical models at compulsory school. Mathematics in everyday life and society seen from a historic perspective.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons, group assignments and writing of a paper.

EXAMINATION
Examination through hand-in assignments, active participation in class and a paper.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: fail/pass
