LUI062 Introductory Theory of Numbers and Statistics 7.5 ECTS credits

PREREQUISITES
General entrance requirements. Applicants must also have completed the first general field of education (20 credits).

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire knowledge of
- the role of statistics in drawing conclusions when comparing different populations
- the computer as a tool in preparing and returning statistic material
- the use of the computer in teaching
- the axiomatic and deductive structure in mathematical theory of numbers



CONTENTS
Natural numbers, rational numbers, prime numbers, arithmetic laws, the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, different numerical systems, arithmetic and geometric series, summation sign and the recursion theorem. Study of computer programmes designed for learning mathematics and the programme Excel.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons and group work.

EXAMINATION
Examination through written exam, participation in discussions and individual written reflection.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: fail/pass
