PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the course LUA101.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire knowledge of
- child development of reading and writing skills and the connection between spoken and written language
- how to encourage children's language development
- how to create a good environment for learning
- current research in the field
- the significance of play in learning

Students are to acquire an approach to children's learning that results in
- the creation of a vivid reading and writing culture
- teaching based on children's individual knowledge and experience
- ability as educators to support children's development in a playful and creative way


CONTENTS
The course studies current research on theories of play. It explores the field of language development including
- speech, reading and writing
- methodological aspects aiming to encourage language, reading and writing development
- children's literature
- the significance of the environment in learning
- theories of play
Attention is also given to the student's own approach to language, reading and writing development.


TEACHING
The course is characterised by problem-based working methods and by integration of the theoretical aspects of the course and the work placement. The students will do work placement as an integral part of the training.

EXAMINATION
Examination through written and oral presentation of an individual portfolio and through seminars and a course assignment.
