TIMEPERIOD: O I LANGUAGE:English EXAMINER Sytse Strijbos Docent PREREQUISITES General competence. COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to give the student: - insight in ethical and normative questions concerning technology in general and how technology affects our modern world - the ability to read, in a critical way, a text about contemporary philosophy of technology and develop and express clearly one's own ideas orally as well as in a written paper CONTENTS Ethical and normative issues of technology are widely discussed in contemporary studies of technology. Once people who are trained in engineering start reflecting on the nature and the meaning of technology they are no longer doing technology but are in fact engaged in a kind of philosophy. This course aims to link engineering and humanity disciplines in a broad interdisciplinary approach of technology.
Part 1 will give a profile of modern culture and show the needs for and possibilities of an ethics for technology. Attention will be focused on different main characteristics of our time;
Part 2 will examine the importance of information technology and computer technology for our modern world and its transforming effects on human life.
Active participation in the course by giving a presentation and writing short commentaries for discussion (2 point)
The study of some additional literature on the topic of the presentation and writing of a paper which must be submitted at the end of the course (3 points) | |
