MAM008 Algebra 6.0 ECTS credits | |
TIMEPERIOD: LANGUAGE:English/Swedish EXAMINER Thomas Gunnarsson Univ lekt PREREQUISITES COURSE AIM To familiarise the student with elementary notions and tools of algebra with the objective of meeting the needs of the student in his or her future capacity as a programmer, computer scientist or communications engineer etc. CONTENTS Groups, rings, fields, number theory, modular arithmetic, category theory, universal algebra, applications (in the fields of exact computations, error-correcting codes, cryptology etc). TEACHING The teaching consists of lectures and computer exercises (with the computer algebra system MAGMA). Some lectures can be replaced by mandatory computer laborations. EXAMINATION A written examination at the end of the course. Part of the examination can consists of mandatory han-in exercises. The written examination can be complemented with an oral examination. The tests are graded according to rule "A" in "Rules for examination". For a passing grade in the course the computer exercises (laborations) must be satisfactory done. REMARKS Manuals for the computer algebra system MAGMA may be borrowed from the department. The course is taught together with the course MAM603.
