PREREQUISITES
General.

COURSE AIM
The aim of this course is to give a broad introduction to general geology.

CONTENTS
General geology: Plate tectonics and the formation of the Earth.
Mineralogy: General and special mineralogy. Identification methods.
Petrology: Magmatic, sedimentary och metamorphic processes and rocks. Diagnostic methods for rocks.
Structural geology: Basic tectonics. Folding, faulting, fractures, schistosity and lineation.
Prequarternary och regional geology: The geologic time scale. The geology of Sweden and its surroundings.
Quarternary geology and soils: Recent surface processes. Sea level changes. The Quarternary formations of Scandinavia. Chemical and physical properties of soils.
Maps: Various types of geologic maps and their interpretation. Air-photointerpretation.
Man and the geologic environment: Man as a factor in geologic processes (case stories). Geologic process of vital importance for man.
Field work and excursions: Geologic mapping of hard rock and soils. Visits to mines, pits, dams and reclaimed areas.



TEACHING
Tutorial (the lectures are given in Swedish) but practicals (given in English) together with the ordinary class. Practicals, field work and a project work are compulsory.


EXAMINATION
Project work and written examination at the end of the course including identification test of rocks and minerals.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: U, 3, 4, 5
