TIMEPERIOD: Q III LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Esa Vuorinen Univ adj PREREQUISITES Basic courses in Metallic Materials (MPM018) and Non-metallic (ceramic) Materials (MPP001) COURSE AIM Understanding of the influence from alloy composition and heat treatment on the properties of steel. Knowledge about the occurence of and protection from different types of corrosion. Knowledge about the properties and use of components produced by powder metallurgy. CONTENTS The structure of steel, heat treatments and properties: phases, TTT- and CCT-diagrams, heat treatments, hardening mechanisms and hardenability, annealing, surface hardening, stainless steels and tool steels. Corrosion theory: electrochemistry, types of corrosion, corrosion control, oxidation, surface treatments. Powder metallurgy: powder manufacture, shaping and sintering methods, properties of materials made by the powder metallurgy route such as cemented carbides, sintered steels and high speed steels, similarities and differences in comparison to ceramic materials. TEACHING Lectures, tutorials and laboraty work. EXAMINATION Written exam and laboratory work. COURSE GRADE SCALE: ITEMS/CREDITS | |
