Civil and Mining Engineering

ABS600 Applied Finite Element Method 6.0 ECTS credits

TIMEPERIOD:
QI,QII,QIII,QIV

LANGUAGE:English/Swedish

EXAMINER
Milan Veljkovic Univ lekt

PREREQUISITES
Knowledge of engineering methods for problem solving, and in particular the Finete Element Method, is required for the discussion of result obtained by commercial codes.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to introduce students to Finite Element modelling of various structural problems and to proper interpretation of FE results.

CONTENTS
The course starts with basic introduction to geometry modelling or so called pre-processing. Later, three areas of structural mechanics are dealt with: elastic static analysis, elastic dynamic analysis and non-linear analysis. Structures made of various materials, for example steel, concrete, ice, timber or combination of two materials, will be calculated.

TEACHING
One numercal example within each area will be presented. After each numerical example is explained the students will obtain a compulsory assignment with specific questions. Students can choose a compulsory assignment from three areas of structural mechanics or three assignments from one area, according to their interest. Group consisting of two students should solve assignments.
Assignments have to be approved before students get a project assignment.
The project assignment has to be solved individually. Students can choose commercial FE code, such as ABAQUS, DIANA or corresponding code for computation, and FEMGEN/VIEW for pre- and post-processing.

Individual time schedule is made for each student/group.

Students have to write their assignment and the project in html format. Judgements of assignments.

EXAMINATION
Students have to write their assignment and the project in html-format. Judgement of assignments.
