TIMEPERIOD: Q II LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER K Pousette Fo ing PREREQUISITES ABG002 (Soil Mechanics). COURSE AIM The course will give an essential knowledge about remedial investigation and feasibility studies in order to propose suitable methods for remediation of contaminated soil. For this purpose one need a know-how about formations of geology, sampling of contaminated soil and water, soil chemistry, contaminant transport in soil and remediation technologies. The course will also give knowledge and information about how to build a liner with natural materials as well as with synthetic materials. The course will introduce problems with radon and legal handling of contaminated soil. CONTENTS Engineering geology: Quarternary formations and characteristic soil profiles with different soil types important for the design work. Remedial investigation: How to conduct monitoring of soil and water in a remedial investigation. Soil chemistry: This deals with the dispersion of organic inorganic pollutants in the ground. It involves the properties of filtering and lining in the ground, and how different factors can influence these. Problems with draining and acidification causing mould- and corrosion damages will be taken up. Liner technique: Clays (different caly minerals), geosynthetic clay liners, geomembranes and liner design. Storage of nuclear waste will be discussed. Soil remediation: Case studies with contaminated soil will be treated and the possibility to solve the problems with different remediation techniques. Radon: What does it mean with radon in a ground? How to do an investigation if radon is present in an old and new construction and how to avoid problems with radon. Laws: Legal handling of contaminated soil etc. TEACHING The teaching will be given in classes, ev visit to special localities of interest, written assignment and laborations. The assignment takes up the different steps in a remedial investigation and feasibility study. The intention is to produce an application of the contents in the course. Contaminated soil will be studied in the laboratory. Even liner material will be closely examined and remediation techniques for diesel contaminated soil and water will be investigated. The assignment and laborations should be presented both written and orally. EXAMINATION In order to have an approved certificate for the whole course, approved laborations and design exercise are requested. COURSE GRADE SCALE: U, 3, 4, 5 ITEMS/CREDITS | |
