COURSE AIM
To provide knowledge of modern design and construction technology for roads and railways.
To provide advanced knowledge of how to use geological and other types of materials in road and railway design and how embankments can be improved. The student will get advanced knowledge about methods for underground improvement and of soil reinforcement.


CONTENTS
Geology and subsoil conditions. Soil description. Soil exploration. Traffic loading. Bearing capacity of embankments and their stability. Settlements of embankments. Soil improvement methods. Surface and deep compaction. Vibro-compaction. Heavy tamping. Vertical drainage. Cement and lime columns. Piling in embankments. Frost action. Frost penetration. Frost heave. Frost susceptibility. Thaw weakening. Environmental protection and consideration.



TEACHING
Teaching is given in classes including problem solving and discussions. Design project. Assignments will be given. Major part is given as project work in groups of three students.

EXAMINATION
Grading system with a written exam in the end of the course.
