To provide advanced knowledge of how to use geological and other types of materials in road and railway design and how embankments can be improved. The student will get advanced knowledge about methods for underground improvement and of soil reinforcement. CONTENTS Geology and subsoil conditions. Soil description. Soil exploration. Traffic loading. Bearing capacity of embankments and their stability. Settlements of embankments. Soil improvement methods. Surface and deep compaction. Vibro-compaction. Heavy tamping.
