PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the courses KSP046, PÄP044, PÄS030 and PÄN024.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire in-depth knowledge of:
- the higher organisational levels of life, organism - population - society, their development,
function and structure
- the prerequisites and importance of biological diversity
- the energy flow from the sun through different natural and technical systems on earth
- earth as a system, meteorology and magnetic fields
- cosmology and man's place in universe
- important qualities of water, its role as a solvent and as a means of transport
- the indestructibility of matter, transformations, degradation, cycles and spread
- handling of chemical and inflammable substances, risks
- the computer as aids in treatment and presentation of statistics
- statistics as basis for comparing and drawing conclusions about different populations
- the camp school concept and its implementation
The aims are also that students develop:
- care and respect for nature and everything that has life
- ability to discuss and reflect on their own and others' views on nature and the environment
- insights that render a comprehensive view of natural science possible
- ability to prepare, carry out and present the results of an investigation
- familiarity with the methodology and didactics for teaching natural science, with an emphasis on outdoor didactics
- familiarity with schoolchildren's notions of ecological processes
Students are also to choose a subject for and plan their degree projects.

CONTENTS
The diversity, development and systematisation of the world of organisms. Botanical and zoological physiology and anatomy from an evolutionary perspective. Species, fauna and flora.
The didactics of gardening as a school subject. Ecology including winter ecology, limnology and marine biology.
Views on nature from a historical perspective. Outdoor education and environmental didactics.
Meteorology, physics of earth, astronomy and cosmology.
Chemistry of water including solubility, equilibriums and the pH concept. Oxidation and reduction.
Describing and analysing statistics and diagrams, normal distribution, testing of hypotheses.
Methodology and didactics for camp schools.
Memorandum for the degree project.

TEACHING
The teaching will be partly problem-based and will be supplemented with lectures, lessons, literature seminars, laboratory work, excursions and study visits. The students will be able to choose a subject for their degree projects within the frames of the course. A camp school for school children will be carried out during the course.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
