PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the forty-credit A/B-course in history.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students:
- acquire increased, in-depth knowledge and skills in the field and develop an essentially
expanded ability to independently discuss and critically study historical sources
- improve their skills in using the Swedish language verbally and in writing
- gain in-depth insight into scientific methodology and develop an expanded ability to independently discuss and critically judge scientific literature
- are introduced to fields of research connected to their own educational objectives

CONTENTS
The organisation of the course gives room for adjustment to the participants' educational objectives.
The students will be expected to give evidence of theoretical knowledge, methodological skills, knowledge of sources and literature, a scientific approach and independence. The course consists of the following five items:

ITEM 1. Documentation and theory of history. Five credits.
Introduction to the most essential theoretical scientific and social issues in the history of science. Brief introduction to the history of the history of science. Fundamental knowledge of principles for filing, library science, bibliography, important series of sources and principles for study of sources. Exercises in reading manuscripts are also included.

ITEM 2. Optional course. Five credits.
The students are required to take one of the courses listed below. All of the courses are not available every term.
a. History of teaching
b. History of industry and mining
c. Military history
d. Lappish history
e. Women's history
f. Demographic history
g. History of the Arctic Area of the Scandinavian Countries and the Kola Peninsula
h. Modern international history
i. Course (covering 2500 pages of literature) designed by the student in consultation with the examiner

ITEM 3. Paper. Twenty credits.
Preparation of a scientifically documented paper. The paper must give evidence of a higher level of independence and ability for critical study than papers written during previous, more basic courses. The paper, and if possible also a preparatory memorandum, are to be presented in a seminar. Both the paper and the participation in seminars will be evaluated. The paper must also give evidence of an ability to integrate methodological and theoretical scientific and social issues. It is an advantage if the paper is linked to the students' future field of research (thesis).

ITEM 4. Historiography. Five credits.
Historiographic study of the main features of the international and national development of history research. In-depth study of a few epochs and a few current theoretical issues.

ITEM 5. Optional course. Five credits.
Independent study of scientific literature and the students' own design of a literature course covering 2500 pages in consultation with the examiner. The student may also select an already available thematic postgraduate course in Sweden or abroad. The optional thematic course is usually a literature course, but it is also common that students select a suitable course among the available postgraduate courses in Sweden or abroad.

TEACHING
The teaching will consist of lectures, lessons, seminars and group work.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass, Distinction
