PREREQUISITES
Teacher training or equivalent academic degree.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students:
- gain familiarity with research on special education, socio-emotional disturbances, so called "exposed children", bullying and child abuse
- gain knowledge and understanding of the fields and issues mentioned above, and of the public view on and support to the children concerned
Students will be required to make satisfactory written and oral presentations of their achievements.

CONTENTS
Special education as a professional field and as education.
The Social Services Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the education Act.
National curriculums and syllabuses for compulsory school.
Research methodology and report writing.
Theories on attitudes and change of attitude.
Socio-emotional disturbances.
"Exposed" children.
Child abuse.
Bullying.

TEACHING
Compulsory attendance at lessons, active participation in class and individual hand-in assignments. Self-instruction of the prescribed texts. Literature seminars. Oral presentations of projects.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
