PREREQUISITES
Teacher training for teaching mathematics and science in grade 1-7 or equivalent older form of teacher training.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire in-depth knowledge of:
- mathematical theory of numbers and the development and construction of the numerical system
- the development of mathematics from a historical perspective
- a few important aspects of the mathematics and mathematical didactics of comprehensive school
- rules of arithmetic, algorithms, algebraic thinking and strategies for problem solving
- the meaning of problem solving on basis of equations and of algebra from the point of view of content
- tests and evaluations in the latter years of comprehensive school

CONTENTS
Natural, whole, rational, irrational and complex numbers. Prime numbers.
Euclid's algorithm. The fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Modulo calculation. The fundamental theorem of algebra. The unique factorisation theorem. Polynomial division. Statements, implication, equivalence and equation. Deduction and induction. Geometric series and induction evidence. The binomial theorem.
Didactics for comprehensive school, especially for teaching the theory of numbers, algebra, equations and geometry.
Connection and differences between knowledge of procedure and knowledge of concepts, applied and problem solving mathematics, goals of attainment and goals of aspiration, mental arithmetic and algorithms. The calculator.
The role of language in mathematics. Conversation, reasoning and working methods.
The role and function of tests in the interplay between pupils, teachers and parents. The role of evaluations individually, locally, nationally and internationally. The influence of teaching aids, notional tests and teachers on the content of the teaching in mathematics.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons and group work.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
