PREREQUISITES
Teacher training for teaching Swedish and social studies in grade 1-7 or equivalent training.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire in-depth knowledge of:
- the development of mathematics from a historical perspective
- the development of the numerical system
- a few important aspects of the mathematics and mathematical didactics of comprehensive school
- rules of arithmetic, algorithms, algebraic thinking and strategies for problem solving
- tests and evaluations in comprehensive school

CONTENTS
The decimal system, addition and multiplication tables, automation.
Different position systems and algorithms.
Natural, negative, rational and irrational numbers. Prime numbers.
The connections between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Mental arithmetic and estimation. Units.
The connection between fractions and division. The connection between fractions, decimal numbers and percentage. The concept of percentage.
The fundamentals of geometry and its function in the understanding of other mathematical concepts. The introduction of algebraic thinking in the early years of school.
Connections and differences between knowledge of procedure and knowledge of concepts, applied and problem solving mathematics, goals of attainment and goals of aspiration, mental arithmetic and algorithms. The calculator.
The role of language in mathematics. Conversation, reasoning and working methods.
The role and function of tests in the interplay between pupils, teachers and parents. The role of evaluations individually, locally, nationally and internationally. The influence of teaching aids, notional tests and teachers on the content of the teaching in mathematics.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons and group work.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in groups.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
