PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the courses PÄP400 and PÄP401.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students develop understanding of the pupil as an active and creative individual in the process of knowledge. Students are to gain understanding of the importance of natural links between the pupil' learning and the pupil's individual notions and experiences. Students are also to develop a comprehensive view of learning difficulties, and an ability to view the causes of and measurements against learning difficulties from different perspectives. Finally, students are to learn to apply:
- work procedures based on the individual pupil's needs, experiences and interests, which prevent school problems and encourage the pupil in his/her development
- work procedures based on the pupil's resources and possibilities of development which meet the pupil's right to be viewed as a competent individual


CONTENTS
Basic acquisition of reading, learning and mathematical skills
Pupils in need of special support and encouragement and the responsibility of schools to meet these pupil's needs
Special education, special methodology
Personal attitudes and values concerning pupils in need of special support and encouragement
Use of computers and information technology in special education


TEACHING
The course will be signified by problem-based work procedures and by integration of theoretical parts and teaching practice.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in group. The work placement period and assignments given during this period will be evaluated.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
