PREREQUISITES
Imperative Programming and Reactive (real-time) Programming.

COURSE AIM
The goal is to provide basic knowledge about computer networks and communication protocols, and especially to give an understanding for the protocols used in the Internet.

CONTENTS
Communication protocols: The Internet model (TCP/IP) and a brief overview of the ISO Open Systems Interface. Switching methods: packet switching and circuit switching. Local Area Networks (LAN): Ethernet, token ring. Wide Area Networks (WAN): SDH/SONET, ATM. Routing. Error detection and correction: sliding window protocols. Clients and servers, sockets. Multicast protocols and network support for real-time transmission of voice and video. Protocol implementation- and operating system issues.

TEACHING
Lectures and cumpulsory assignments, including one development task.

EXAMINATION
Grades examination, assignments, and presentation of the development project (written and oral).
