COURSE AIM
The course gives basic knowledge about Solar Collectors, Natural Heat Systems and Thermal Energy Storage. For each of these areas the technique, dimensioning and cost are dealt with. The central point is on thermal energy storage. The course is finished off with a project work in which a space heating and/or cooling system is designed.
CONTENTS
Heat Transfer and Heat Transport: Physical description of heat conduction, radiation and convection. Thermal properties of different materials.
Solar Energy: Active and passive. Current research. Solar radiation intensity on sloping surface. Different types of solar collectors. Applications. HW equation, calculation examples - plane solar collectors. Cost. Architecture - passive solar energy.
Natural Heat Sources: Different systems in air, ground and water. Extraction of heat and cold.
Heat pumps. Reinjection of ground heat system.
Thermal Energy Storage: Current research. Different storage techniques. Short and long term storage. Economy. Design calculation - size - heat loss etc.
Project Work. Design of thermal energy storage system. Defining and planning of project. Selection of system. Technical data and cost data. Optimization. Documentation.
