General information about studying at Luleå University

TIMEPERIOD: Quarter II

LANGUAGE: English

EXAMINER
A Sellgren Prof

PREREQUISITES
Basic course in hydraulics, hydrology, mathematics and programming.

COURSE AIM
The course covers methods to calculate the spread of pollution and its dilution in the atmosphere and in water, which gives an understanding of the processes involved. The course also provides an understanding of climatological factors which affect recipient conditions.

CONTENTS
Climatology: Global climatological factors due to the large scale spread of pollution. Climatological and hydrological factors which concern local aspects of dispersion. Special attention is given to subarctic and semiarctic climatic relationships. Spreading models: Mathematical description of molecular and turbulent diffusion, dispersion density stratification, stable and unstable stratification. Dispersion of particles. Jets and plumes: Physical description, circular and plane jets, outlets near water surface. Physics of lakes: Circulation in lakes, seich and stratified flows. Handling of mine waste. Numerical models. Modelling water quality parameters: Numerical models in general. An introduction to the mathematical description of chemical and biological processes. Construction problem: Application of an available numerical model on water quality.
