PREREQUISITES
Variational methods in solid mechanics (MTM 030), Advanced fluid mechanics (MTM038) or similar.
COURSE AIM
To explain mechanisms and characteristics of wave propagation in solids, structural elements and fluids and to give knowledge of specific analytical methods and application of basic mathematical and experi- mental techniques.
CONTENTS
The course treats basic theoretical concepts like linear, non-linear and inhomogenous systems, dispersive and non-dispersive waves, shock waves, modal waves and wave-guides. Areas of application are wave propagation in beams, rods and plates; seismic, acoustic and gas-dynamic waves as well as water waves, internal waves and hydrodynamic stability.
Mathematical background; (10%) Partial differential equations, Fourier methods, transform methods, asymptotic methods.
Analysis of mechanical systems; (60%) Mechanical structures and systems like rods, beams, plates, solid bodies, liquids, and gases are analysed with respect to wave propagation. Concepts like propagation, dispersion, phase velocity and group velocity are clarified. Reflection and transmission at boundaries are analysed.
Project work; (30%) One of the analysed wave propagation situations is studied experimentally. The study is planned and performed by the students (under supervision) using available experimental equipment. An extensive theoretical study can be done as an alternative.
TEACHING
Lessons and supervision.
