PREREQUISITES
MTF059 Optics

COURSE AIM
The course will give the student a thorough knowledge of the foundation of physical optics and applications of techniques based on optics in modern engineering.

CONTENTS
The course starts with Fresnel-Kirchoff's theory for the propagation of scalar waves. This theory forms the basis for the treatment of Fresnel- and Fraunhofer diffraction, the propagation of laser beams and Fourier optics. Polarisation and birefringence is treated with matrix methods. Interference, coherence and holography is covered in more detail than in MTF059. Demonstrations and laboratory work covering TV-holography, pulsed holography, electronic speckle photography, laser-Doppler anemometry and Fourier optics.

TEACHING
Lectures, demonstrations and laboratory work.
