COURSE AIM
To give an understanding of thermohydraulic design problems related to turbomachines, boilers and other process components in thermal power plants, to give ability to carry out one-dimensional calculations for compressible flow situations, stage calculations for compressors and turbines, heat balance calculations and circulation rate calculations for boilers, and design calculations for thermal storages.
CONTENTS
Lectures: One-dimensional compressible flow in nozzles and channels with and without friction and heat transfer. Shock flow. Elementary cascade and stage theory. Radial balance. Flow losses in cascades. Applications in radial and axial compressors, gas expanders and steam turbines. Heat balance calculations for boilers. Sizing of heat transfer surfaces. Two-phase flow theory. Application to circulation rate calculations for steam boilers.
Project tasks: 1) Prediction of thrust of air craft jet engine.
2) Heat balance calculations for steam boiler.
