COURSE AIM
The course will give the student a knowledge of geometrical optics, optical instrumentation and physical optics and applications of optics in modern engineering.

CONTENTS
Foundation of geometrical optics. Imaging by lenses and systems of lenses. Matrix methods for construction and analysis of lens systems. Aberrations and simple means to reduce them. Cameras, microscopes, telescopes and other optical instruments. Computer methods to design, analyze and optimise optical systems. Optical instruments, computer and laboratory work. Interference of light. Fraunhofer and Fresnel diffraction. Polarisation. Birefringence. Interferometry, holography and other applications. Measurement by optical techniques.

TEACHING
Lectures, demonstrations and laboratory work.
