COURSE AIM

CONTENTS
The course is mostly experimental (around 70% of the time) with seminars related to specific aspects in the experimental work. The aim of the practical work is to produce a silicon nitride based cutting tool, by sieving and mixing the powders, pressing, sintering and processing to final shape (by laser, water jet and traditional cutting with a diamond wheel). After that, the tool will be treated to machining on cast iron with a cutting speed of around 1200m(min. The wear will then be compared to a similar tool made by Sandvik, treated to the same test procedure. In the experimental work there also will be a determination of the Weibull modulus for Al2O33 components made by Ifö AB.The experimental work is, by experience, rather time consuming.

TEACHING

EXAMINATION
In the end of the course, the different groups will present their results for the whole group and the teachers.
