COURSE AIM
The course will give the student a general knowledge of the physical metallurgy of welding with a special emphasis on steel.
CONTENTS
-Overview of fusion-welding, focusing on conventional methods.
-Solutions to the heatconductivity equations for welding. Plane and linesource.
-Solubility of gases in melts and solid state. Mechanisms of solidification and microstructure formation as a result of different welding conditions.
-The effect of the thermal cycle on the heat affected base material. Grain coarsening, particle dissolution, solid-state transformations.
-Cracks and defects introduced by the weldning process.
-Solid-state welding and brazing.
