COURSE AIM
The objective of the course is give the students knowledge about heterogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysts and of the industrial applications of these primarily in chemical production processes.
CONTENTS
Introduction: the role of heterogeneous catalysis in modern chemical industry.
Basic concepts and fundamental catalysis: adsorption, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects.
Catalysts: acid catalysts and zeolites, supported metal catalysts, metal oxides and other catalyst types.
Catalytic processes in the refining industry: catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, desulfurization.
Catalytic processes in petrochemical industry and other branches of the chemical industry: oxidation and partial oxidation, processes based on utilization of synthesis gas (ammonia, methanol) etc.
Environmentally important catalytic processes: automotive exhaust gas cleaning, catalytic combustion, SCR.
TEACHING
The course is presented in the form of lectures. In an individual work, the student investigates the current technological status of a selected catalytic process and presents this in the form of a report.
EXAMINATION
Written examination with differentiated grades. Evaluation of the written examination is performed according to Alternative B in "regler för tentamen". The laboratory exercises are reported in the form of a written reports, and an oral presentation of the results.
