General information about studying at Luleå University
TIMEPERIOD:
LANGUAGE: English/Swedish
EXAMINER
Anders Ågren Univ lekt
PREREQUISITES
Physical and Chemical Environmental Technology (ARF 005).
COURSE AIM
The course will consist of two main parts; product design (PD) and production systems (PS).
The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of:
- technical acoustics and the mechanisms that govern the generation of noise from different
constructions
- a number of methods to reduce noise from machinery and constructions
- a number of methods to design low noise production
- general principles for loudspeaker design
CONTENTS
Basic technical acoustics (12%). Sound field theory.
Advanced measurement technique 12 %. Introduction to analogue and digital signal processing. Source identification by sound intensity measurements. Basic concepts and definitions of experimental modal analysis.
Structural acoustics (12%) (PD). Wave types in infinite structures. Wave types in finite structures. Propagation of structure borne noise. Damping. Natural vibrations, forced vibrations. Resonances in structures.
Noise excitation and sound radiation (10%). Sound radiation from vibrating structures. Noise generating mechanisms in rotating machinery and from impacts.
Design of low noise machinery (12%.) Redesign of machinery and equipment. Fan noise and silencers.
Room acoustics, planning and design of low noise production systems (12%) (PS). Acoustic planning of large industrial halls. Calculations and computer simulations. Prediction methods to calculate the sound levels in small rooms and in industrial halls. Ray tracing method for computer modelling. Noise control in the planning stage. Material handling equipment.
Loudspeaker technology 15%. Working principles, design, sound radiation, resonance phenomena, electrical filters, predictions, computer simulation and measurements.
Project work (27%). Projects are carried out specialising in acoustic problems. The projects may have applications that lie in the main study direction or in the interests of the students.
TEACHING
Mainly lecturing (compulsory attendance), experiments and a project. Some lectures may be given by the students. The lectures are mainly about theory and real-life applications, there are also some numerical examples given. The experiments are designed in order to illustrate the theoretical parts. The projects may, if suitable, be integrated with the main course of PD or PS. The project must be summarised in a written report and be orally presented in front of the class.
EXAMINATION
Written and orally presented project report.
Experiments are compulsory and must be presented in a written experiment report.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, 3, 4, 5
ITEMS AND CREDITS
Project work 5.2 ECTS
Laboratory work 0.7 ECTS
COURSE LITERATURE
Meindel Kleiner: Auidoteknik och akustik. CTH 1990.
Other literature and English alternatives will be presented later.
