ABB006, ABB007 Elementary Theory of Structures I and II

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in the design of structural elements of timber for houses and smaller buildings.

CONTENTS
Beam Design (60%) Codes. Bending and shear capacity of beams. Lateral flexure and flexural bucking of columns. Joints (10%) Common joints. Design of nail and bolt joints. Roof Structures (30%) Common roof structures. Design of nailed roof structures and trusses.

TEACHING
Project work The structural design of a wooden bridge is assigned as a project work. Students work in groups of two. Laboratory work One laboratory work is assigned; bending of a wooden truss to failure. Participation in laboratory work is compulsory.
