COURSE AIM
It is necessary for an engineer who is going to perform her or his career in the arctic or sub arctic regions to control problems related to cold climate and snow. The course will give you knowledge about: - snow as a material, the formation of snow, types, recrystallisation, strength etc. - snow as an urban phenomenon, possiblities and problems - pollution in snow

CONTENTS
Snow as a material, the formation of snow, strength etc approximately 30% Snow as an urban phenomenon, pollution in snow approximately 30% Design of constructions in snow approximately 20% Stability and avalanche problems approximately 20%

TEACHING
The course is devided into three parts. First there are some introductory lectures followed by a project work. The last part consists of field studies where theory and practical investigations are carried out side by side. Each part is reported orally and by a written report.

EXAMINATION
Fullfilling of the oral and written reports and participation in the field studies give the grade passed.
