COURSE AIM
The course will give knowledge and information about how to build a liner with natural materials as well as with synthetic materials. System of liners are for example forthcoming in landfills, old as well as new ones, in covering- och bottom layers. To restore a polluted ground by remediation one need a know-how about formations of geology, sampling of polluted soil and water, ground chemistry etc. In the course some essential and required techniques will be delt with, in order to perform sampling and cleaning up. Examples of authentical cases are presented.

CONTENTS
Engineering geology, quarternaty formations and charicteristic soil profiles with different soil types important for the design work.  GROUND CHEMISTRY This deals with the dispersion of organic and inorganic pollutants in the ground. It involves the properties of filtering and lining in the ground, and how different factors can influence these. Problems with draining and acidification causing mould- and corrosion damages will be taken up. LINER TECHNIQUE Clays (different clay minerals), bottom- and covering layers for deponies. Storage of nuclear waste will be discussed. GROUND REMEDIATION Case studies with polluted ground will be treated and the possibility to solve the problems with different cleaning up methods. RADON What does it mean with radon in a ground? How to do an investigation if radon is present in an old and new construction and how to avoid problem with radon. LAWS Legal handling of ground pollutions etc.

TEACHING
The teaching will be given in classes, visits to special localities of interest, written assignments and laborations. The design project will be a red line through different parts of the course. The intention is to produce an application of the contents in the course. Contaminated soil will be studied in the laboratory. Even liner material will be closely examined.

EXAMINATION
In order to have an approved certificate for the whole course, approved laborations and design exercise is a demand.
