PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the courses PÄN400, PÄN403, PÄN404 and PÄN405 or equivalent basic course in biology.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students:
- acquire knowledge of molecular biology
- acquire knowledge of genetic engineering
- acquire knowledge of the process of evolution from the level of genes to the level of the individual
- gain familiarity with laboratory methodology of molecular biology
- develop ability to discuss and take up a definite position on ethical and moral aspects of genetic engineering


CONTENTS
Biochemistry, molecular genetics, the origin of life and evolution.

TEACHING
Lectures, lessons, group work and laboratory work.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in group.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
