PREREQUISITES
General eligibility and mathematics from a three year high school education or equivalent.


COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to illustrate environmental problems from a national ekonomic perspective. The student will get an undersatanding of the possibilitiesand limitations of a market economy regarding environmental and natural resource economy. The course also aims to give the student the ability to apply environmental economic theory on current environmental problems.


CONTENTS
Initially the course gives a brief introduction to the core concepts of economics. Then the course focuses on the theory of environmental economics. Questions that will be dealt with during the course are for example:

1. How can environmental problems be explained from an economic point of view?
2. What economic instruments are available for environmental policy makers and how can
these be applied?
3. How is sustainable development defined and what is the relation between economic
growth and environmental quality? Here the connection between international trade and the
environment is discussed.
4. What is meant by scarcity of natural resources?.

After this theoretical part to the course the students are given an opportunity to apply environmental economics on current environmental issues. These environmental issues may be of local, regional as well as global nature. The results are presented for the other students in the class as well as in written reports.
