COURSE AIM To give the student ability to understand the fundaments of ecology, ecotoxicology and environmental protection and to analyse in what ways the remedies of environmental economics can be used to prevent, counteract or recitify a concrete environmental problem. CONTENTS General ecology. Structure and function of ecosystems, diversity and richness of species, energy flow and pathways of elements in the ecosystems. Ecology of organisms, populations and communities. Field trip to common ecosystems in the Luleå region. Ecotoxicology. Transport of pollutants in air, soil and water and its effects on ecosystems, organisms and human health. Applied environmental economics. The student shall write a paper in which a concrete environmental problem shall be analysed and possible economic tools to prevent, counteract or rectify the problem are pointed out and discussed.
