TIMEPERIOD: Q II LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Johan Sterte Prof PREREQUISITES Basic qualifications. COURSE AIM The objective of the course is to give the students an insight into chemical, metallurgical and mineralogical industrial activities. The course is partly intended as an introduction to the applied technical areas included in the industrial chemistry program but it can also be taken as an independent introductory course by students following other educational programs. CONTENTS The chemical industry. Characteristics of chemical industrial activities. Structure of Swedish and international chemical industry. Overview of Swedish chemical industry. Metallurgical industry. An introduction to the processmetallurgical industry, its structure and organization. Mineral processing. Structure of the Swedish mineral industry. Basic concepts, unit operation and processes. Process schedules. Use and interpretation of various types of schedules used to describe industrial processes. Pulp and paper manufacture. General description of process technology and processchemistry in the pulp and paper industry. Ore concentration.General description of an ore dressing plant. Metal manufacture. Overview of processes for copper and steel manufacture. Environmental aspects of industrial activities. General introduction and discussion of specific examples taken from process industries. Safety. Safety in chemical laboratory work. Safety risks. General safety rules and regulations. First aid. Fire protection. Minimizing fire risks. Fighting fires. Use of fire extinguishers. Lectures by invited representatives from the local process industry. TEACHING The course is presented in the form of lectures and a major project assignment. The project is performed in groups of 4-6 students. The course also includes educational visits at a number of local process industries and a fire-drill. EXAMINATION Written examination with differentiated grades. Evaluation of the written examination is performed according to Alternative B in "regler för tentamen". The project assignment is reported in the form of a written report and an oral presentation of the results. COURSE GRADE SCALE: U,3,4,5 ITEMS/CREDITS | |
