COURSE AIM
The coarse will give fundamental knowledge from a chemical as well as technical point of view regarding hydrometallurgical metal production from ores and concentrates. Teaching will be given on unit operations such as leaching, electrolysis, solvent extraction etc..


CONTENTS
Introduction: Comparison of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical process technology. Overview of hydrometallurgical unit operations and processes.
Hydrometallurgical phase diagrams: Solubility and Pourbaix diagrams.
Leaching: Theory, reagents, methods and materials.
Solution treatment: Chemical precipitation, cementation, ion exchange and solvent extraction.
Metal recovery: Technical electrochemistry, electrorefining, electrowinning and gas reduction.
Hydrometallurgical processes: Description of some hydrometallurgical applications with environmental considerations.
Laboratory exercises: Leaching of zinc calcine and solvent extraction of copper.




TEACHING
Lectures and compulsory laboratory exercises.


EXAMINATION
Approved laboratory reports and written exam with differentiated grades.
