KMK069 Solids and Polymers 6.0 ECTS credits
TIMEPERIOD: Q III LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Lars Gunneriusson Univ lekt PREREQUISITES KMK036 or KMK046 COURSE AIM The course shall establish a familiarity within solid state chemistry . The fundamental causes to corrosion, and actions to prevent corrosion shall be well known. The course presents different typs of organic polymers. It also describes the basic organic reactions used for the preparation, and also responsible for the brake-down, of those polymers. CONTENTS Solid state structures: Lattices, unit cells, close packing and structure holes. Bravais lattices. ABn - type structures including polyatomic molecules/ions. Crystal defects. Planar nets, Miller indexes. X-ray diffraction. Solid state energetics: Lattice energy. Thermodynamic cycles - calculation of unknown energy parameters. Ligand field strength. Silicates: Silicate structures, clay minerals. Corrosion: Electrochemical and chemical corrosion. Catodic protection. Passivation, inhibition, immunity. Organic polymers - classification: Natural and synthetic polymers; chain-growth and step-growth polymers; linear, branched and cross-linked polymers Alkenes: Isolated and conjugated systems. Structur and reactivity. Radical, anionic, and cationic addition reacions. Metal-alkene-complexes (Ziegler-Natta catalysts) The carbonyl group: Structure and reactivity. Carboxylic acid derivatives - formation and reactions. Carbonic acid derivatives - formation and reactions. Aldehydes and ketones; acetals - formation and reactions. Imines - formation and reactions. Aromatic systems: Structure and reactivity. Epoxides: Structure and reactivity. Halogenated hydrocarbons. Structure and reactivity. Halogenation reactions TEACHING EXAMINATION Graded written examinations and passed laboratory and project assignments COURSE GRADE SCALE: ITEMS/CREDITS
