KMK051 Solid State Cheminstry 6.0 ECTS credits | |
TIMEPERIOD: Q III LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Lars Gunneriusson Univ lekt PREREQUISITES KMK036, KMK046 or similar COURSE AIM The course shall establish a familiarity within solid state chemistry An introduction shall be given to mineralogy and geology. After the course, the student shall be able to identify the most important minerals from an economical and technical point of view, as well as their chemical composition and physical characteristics. The fundamental causes to corrosion, and actions to prevent corrosion shall be well known. CONTENTS Solid state structures: Lattices, unit cells, close packing and structure holes. Bravais lattices. ABn - type structures including polyatomic molecules/ions. Crystal defects. Planar nets, Miller indexes. X-ray diffraction. Solid state energetics: Lattice energy. Thermodynamic cycles - calculation of unknown energy parameters. Ligand field strength. Silicates: Silicate structures, clay minerals. Corrosion: Electrochemical and chemical corrosion. Catodic protection. Passivation, inhibition, immunity. Mineralogy: Definition of minerals and kind of rocks. Minerals as natural occurring chemicals. Mineral groups: Elements, salts, oxides, sulphides, sulphates, carbonates and silicates. Ore and industrial minerals. Review of the technically and economically most important minerals. TEACHING The instruction consists of lessons, project tasks and compulsory laboratory classes. The first lesson is also compulsory.
