PREREQUISITES
Basics in chemistry or materialphysics.

COURSE AIM
The student will get
- a survey over the theory of plastic deformation
- knowledge about the relationship between microstructure and properties of engineering materials
- knowledge about usage of some metallic and polymeric materials

CONTENTS
Theory of the mechanical properties. Metallic materials: Atomic structures, atomic arrangements, the mechanism of deformation, basic dislocation theory, diffusion, phase equilibrium, phase diagrams, thermal processing, creep, fabrication and corrosion. Polymers: Polymer structure, molecular weight, crystallinity, glass transition, viscoelasticity, rubber, yielding and deformation mechanisms.



TEACHING
Lectures, exercises and laboratory work.
Compulsory exercises will be given.







EXAMINATION
Written examination at the end of the course.
