PREREQUISITES


COURSE AIM
The course will give the student a knowledge of fundamental physical optics and thermodynamics.

CONTENTS
Waves.
Mathematical description of waves, Wave equation, Mechanical waves in solids, liquids and gases, Fundamental acoustics, Interference of light. Fraunhofer diffraction. Polarisation. Interferometry. Measurement by optical techniques.
Thermodynamics.
Classical Thermodynamics: Properties of a pure substance. Work and heat. The first and second law of thermodynamics, Heat.
Transfer:Conduction. Forced and natural convection. Radiation.
Combined modes of heat transfer.

TEACHING
Lectures, demonstrations and laboratory work.
