TIMEPERIOD: LANGUAGE:English EXAMINER H Shanavaz Prof PREREQUISITES Possess a bachelor's degree in science or 120 university points in the field of science or equivalent and have a good knowledge in English. COURSE AIM Module 1: The course shall give the basic knowledge on the effects of the thermal climate on man's comfort, performance and health. It shall teach the students the basic methods of measurement and assessment of the thermal environment and principles and measures of its improvement and control. Module 2: To present a basic knowledge about visual system, lighting performance and providing guidance for lighting of specific tasks. To provide information on optimum visual conditions. Module 3: To give the basic knowledge of the concept of acoustics and vibrations, noise and vibrations hazards to man, and noise control. CONTENTS Module 1: Thermal environment. Physics of heath exchange; Human temperature regulation; Indoor environments; Effects of thermal climate; Thermal stress; Hot and Cold environments; Climate indicates; Environmental control and personal protection; Measurements, assessments and instrumentation. Module 2: Vision and lighting. The human eye and visual responses to light; Adverse effects of lighting and visual fatigue; Ergonomics of lighting; Light units and measurements. Module 3: Noise and vibration. Acoustics concepts; Perception of noise and vibration; physiological and psychological effects of noise; Speech communication; Sound insulation and isolation; effects of vibration; Measurement techniques and the control of noise and vibration. TEACHING All modules: Lectures and compulsory laboratory practicals. EXAMINATION Module 1: Written examination, essay writing and submission of laboratory reports. Module 2: Written examination, essay writing, laboratory and mini-projects. Module 3: Assignments
