TIMEPERIOD: ht LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Olof Stjernström Univ lektor PREREQUISITES Applicants must have completed the B-course in social and economic geography COURSE AIM The aims of the course are that students: - gain increased knowledge of how natural resources are used and the environmental consequences - acquire increased knowledge of population, economy and politics of arctic and sub-arctic areas in the northern hemisphere in particular - acquire in-depth knowledge of current research and public discussions on the issues indicated above CONTENTS ITEM 1. Theory and methodology. Geography as science. Different scientific approaches and current research in the field will be discussed. The methodology will involve presentations of problems, testing of hypotheses, quantitative and qualitative methods. Item 1 will be concluded with an excursion in the Arctic area of the Scandinavian countries and the Kola Peninsula that will be focused on the use of resources, the environment and the social structure in peripheral areas. ITEM 2. Excursion and written report. ITEM 3. Man and environment with special attention to arctic and sub-arctic areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Analysis of the relationship between man and environment. Comparisons between different geographical areas in the world with emphasis on the Northern Hemisphere. ITEM 4. Paper. The students will be required to act as opponents and participate in seminars. TEACHING The teaching will take the form of lectures, lessons, seminars and group practice. The seminars and the group practice are compulsory. A longer excursion will be included in the course. Smaller costs for the excursions may arise. EXAMINATION Written exam and evaluation of assignments, paper and achievements during seminars. Each item will be concluded with a test.
