PREREQUISITES
General eligibility and mathematics from a three year high school education or equivalent.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to:
- provide general knowledge about economic theory.
- give the ability to apply economic theory on current problems.
- give the ability to critically analyze economic conditions and development trends.

CONTENTS
The course begins with a survey of how prices are determined in a market economy, and the way in which prices work to allocate scarce resources. This is done with the help of supply and demand analysis. The way prices are set in various types of markets, such as monopolies, is also discussed. Also, cases where the free market is not able to allocate resources in an efficient manner, known as market failures, are analyzed.

The course continues with a survey of methods to measure and show national income. The conditions for a balanced economy in society are discussed as is the role economic policy plays when striving for economics balance in society. Both national and international effects of current politics are analyzed. The development of the Swedish economy during the 20th century is described with the help of theories introduced during the course.
