COURSE AIM
The course will give an introduction to the techniques of geographic
information systems and its use in the community. The student will acquire
knowledge about concepts, terminology, tools and the role of different
organisations. In the second part of the course the design and application
of geographic databases will be treated in detail.

Part I:
- Introduction to GIS
- Data processing
- Software
- Applications of GIS
- Geographic analysis
- Basic data structures
- Data capture and transfer
- Visualisation

Part II:
- Interface between databases and GIS applications
- Implementation of geographic data in relational databases
- Implementation of geographic data in object oriented databases
- Integration of traditional databases with geographic databases
- Geographic modelling and database design


TEACHING
Lectures, practicals and project work.


EXAMINATION
Written examination, seminars and approved laboratory work.
