PREREQUISITES
10 points in mathematics as well as PÄN400, PÄN404 and PÄN405 .

COURSE AIM
The goal of the course is that the student, after completion of the course, should
- be able to apply the four laws of thermodynamics
- be able to use state functions in chemical calculations
- be well aquainted with the concepts: activity and partialmolar quantities
- be able to construct and interpret phase diagrams
- be able to obtain thermodynamic functions from cell potential measurements
- be able to present analytical expressions for the rate of chemical reactions
The course should also give a general knowledge in didactics for chemistry.

CONTENTS
The course covers chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. The following concepts are included:
ideal- and non-ideal gases, thermodynamical state functions, maximum work, activity, partial molar quantities, colligative properties, phase diagrams, electrochemical equilibria, reaction order, activation
energy and enzyme catalysis. The theory is applied during laboratory and calculation exercises.
Didactics in chemistry
