COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to give knowledge about important unit operations and to be able to choose and design equipment for use in chemical processes.

CONTENTS
Equilibrium and material/heat balances (15 %): equilibria, ideal and non-ideal systems, liquid-vapour equilibria, mass, component and heat balances.
Distillation & absorption(30 %): Distillation; equipment, ideal stage, McCabe-Thieles and Sorels method for calculation of the height of a distillation tower. Absorption; equipment, calculation of the number of ideal stages and the diameter and height of a absorption tower, packed and tray tower, operating characteristics of tray towers.
Evaporation (25 %): One and multiple-effect evaporators, boiling point rise, total temperature difference, calculation of heat transfer area.
Filtration (25 %): Cake build-up, expression , washing, filtration equation, different models for expression and washing of the filter cake. Equipment.
Liquid mixing (5 %): Macro- and micromixing, power demand, mixing-time, equipment.


TEACHING
The course is presented in form of lectures, tutorials and compulsory laboratory exercises.

EXAMINATION
Approved laboratory reports and an approved written examination with differentiated grades.
