TIMEPERIOD: Q IV LANGUAGE:English/Swedish EXAMINER Björn Kjellström Prof PREREQUISITES MTF 012 Thermodynamics (or equivalent) COURSE AIM The purpose is to convey understanding of different aspects of reactor technology, and to analyse prerequisies, possibilities and limitations of its use. Of prime importance is wide knowledge about th r™le of nuclear power in energy production systems, as well as safety aspects and waste handling technologies. CONTENTS Fundamental nuclear physics and reactor physics; reactor core cooling; design principles of water-cooled reactors (PWR and BWR); design of fuel and fuel rod assemblies; steam cycle and power generation; fuel cycle; reactor safety systems; spent fuel disposal concepts; reactor safeguards issues. Laboratory exercises may be included, depending on resources allocated. TEACHING Class lectures covers theory in addition to problem solution seminars. Compulsory seminar work and laboratory exercises EXAMINATION Written test with differentiated grades. Correction according to alternative A in "Rules for examination".
