COURSE AIM
It is necessary for an engineer who is going to perform her or his career in the arctic or sub arctic regions to control problems and possibilities related to cold climate and snow. The course will give you knowledge about:

- snow as a material, the formation of snow, types, recrystallisation, strength etc.
- snow as an urban phenomenon, possiblities and problems
- pollution in snow



CONTENTS
Snow as a material, the formation of snow, classification, mechanical properties and strength approximately 40%
Snow as an urban phenomenon, pollution in snow approximately 20%
Snow from a hydropower perspective approximately 20%
Stability and avalanche problems approximately 20%

TEACHING
The course is devided into four parts, lectures, project work, field studies and laboratory experiments. Each part is reported orally and by a written report. Snow as a material, the formation of snow, classification mechanical properties and strength are approwed by a written exam.

EXAMINATION
Approwed oral and written reports, laboratory experiments, field studies and written exam gives the grade.
